Salt Chlorine Generator Brands Compared
All salt cells do the same job, but they disagree on one number that matters for dosing: the target salt level. Dosing to the wrong brand's target is the most common saltwater mistake.
The big three at a glance
| Brand / Model | Target salt | Working range | Cell life (typical) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hayward AquaRite / TurboCell | 3,200 ppm (industry reference) | 2,700–3,400 ppm | 3–5 years (~10,000 hrs) |
| Pentair IntelliChlor (IC20/IC40/IC60) | 3,600 ppm | 3,000–3,900 ppm | 3–5 years (~10,000 hrs) |
| Jandy AquaPure / TruClear | 3,000–3,200 ppm | 2,800–3,500 ppm | 3–6 years |
Why the target difference matters
- A Pentair system reading "low salt" at 3,300 ppm might be perfectly happy at Hayward's target — check your own cell's manual before adding salt, not a generic chart.
- Overshooting is worse than undershooting: most cells shut down or alarm above 4,000–4,500 ppm, and salt only leaves by draining water.
- When your cell shows a salt error, verify with an independent test strip or meter — cell sensors drift over time and often read salt 200–400 ppm off by end of life.
Choosing between them
- Hayward AquaRite: the default for a reason — huge install base, cheap replacement TurboCells, and the 3,200 ppm target most online advice assumes
- Pentair IntelliChlor: integrates cleanly with Pentair automation (EasyTouch/IntelliTouch), cell display shows salt readings live — no separate test needed for quick checks
- Jandy TruClear: compact, reversible cell for easier cleaning, pairs with iAquaLink automation
- CircuPool (value pick): US-based support, generous warranties, and typically $300–500 cheaper — worth comparing if budget leads
Maintenance that extends cell life
- Inspect every 3 months: look for white scale on the cell plates — scale is the #1 cell killer
- Clean only when needed: a mild acid solution (1 part muriatic acid : 4 parts water — acid into water, never the reverse) for 5–10 minutes
- Keep pH in range: high pH accelerates scaling more than anything else
- Expect 3–5 seasons: budget ~$400–800 for a replacement cell. Buying the system with a cheap, widely available replacement cell (Hayward) saves real money long-term
